This past week in my Windows to the World IEW co-op class, we went over allusions. I had previously discussed allusions we’d encountered in a few of our stories informally, but I’d never actually written the word for my students. As I scrawled the word allusion in large letters on the board for the first time, I noticed that my high school students were visibly confused. It turned out that, all this time, they had been thinking I was referencing illusion, not allusion. It was clear I needed to do a better job of defining terms, so I went searching for some ways to clarify.   Allusion is a noun. It is an indirect reference to something else. If I were to say to my class, â€Å"My cat Ginger has a Jekyll and Hyde personality,† they would understand me to mean that my tiny, sweet, innocent-looking kitty has a personality that varies dramatically from one moment to the next. And it does. One moment she is sitting on my lap purring contentedly. The next instant, she’s huffing and trying to bite me as hard as she can. As a rescued feral kitten, she has never been properly tamed, and I think she is at war within herself as to how to respond to her human family at times. Adorable as she is, she is always a bit risky to cuddle. Since I teach out of my home and sweet Ginger is always hanging out along the perimeter, it’s always a good idea to let my students know of her disposition as soon as possible! Even though most of them have yet to encounter Robert Louis Stevenson’s book The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, it is such a w ell-known novel that most people recognize the connection. Allusions are frequently mined from the Bible, classics, history, and pop culture. I love them and love collecting them! They make the world more entertaining. Illusion is also a noun. Simply put, it is something that is likely to be misinterpreted by the senses. Illusions come in many different forms. For example, it is an illusion that money solves all one’s problems. David Copperfield is a talented magician who performs incredible illusions. He dazzles his audiences as he appears to fly across the stage on his own power. Images can also be illusions. We have all seen pictures where lines look like they bend but a ruler confirms they are straight, or an image printed on a flat piece of paper that appears to rise up into three dimensions. I love how the blue and white swirled circles in the image above appear to spin in place. The funny thing is that they don’t. A quick look by staring intently at one spot on the circle confirms it. Out in our peripheral vision, though, the circles continue to swirl. It is a very compelling optical illusion that tricks our brain! So, now that you know the difference between allusion and illusion, you are not likely to be â€Å"tricked† into misunderstanding the two in the future! Allusions and illusions are both fun to recognize and identify. Go out and see if you can add a few more allusions to your lexicon! You will find the pursuit worthwhile and engaging. Temperature inversion layers, also called thermal inversions or just inversion layers, are areas where the normal decrease in air temperature with increasing altitude is reversed and the air above the ground is warmer than the air below it. Inversion layers can occur anywhere from close to ground level up to thousands of feet into the atmosphere. Inversion layers are significant to meteorology because they block atmospheric flow which causes the air over an area experiencing an inversion to become stable. This can then result in various types of weather patterns. More importantly, though, areas with heavy pollution are prone to unhealthy air and an increase in smog when an inversion is present because they trap pollutants at ground level instead of circulating them away. Causes Normally, air temperature decreases at a rate of 3.5Â °F for every 1,000 feet (or roughly 6.4Â °C for every kilometer) you climb into the atmosphere. When this normal cycle is present, it is considered an unstable air mass, and air constantly flows between the warm and cool areas. The air is better able to mix and spread around pollutants. During an inversion episode, temperatures increase with increasing altitude. The warm inversion layer then acts as a cap and stops atmospheric mixing. This is why inversion layers are called stable air masses. Temperature inversions are a result of other weather conditions in an area. They occur most often when a warm, less dense air mass moves over a dense, cold air mass. This can happen, for example, when the air near the ground rapidly loses its heat on a clear night. The ground becomes cooled quickly while the air above it retains the heat the ground was holding during the day. Temperature inversions also occur in some coastal areas because upwelling of cold water can decrease surface air temperature and the cold air mass stays under warmer ones. Topography can also play a role in creating a temperature inversion since it can sometimes cause cold air to flow from mountain peaks down into valleys. This cold air then pushes under the warmer air rising from the valley, creating the inversion. In addition, inversions can also form in areas with significant snow cover because the snow at ground level is cold and its white color reflects almost all heat coming in. Thus, the air above the snow is often warmer because it holds the reflected energy. Consequences Some of the most significant consequences of temperature inversions are the extreme weather conditions they can sometimes create. One example is freezing rain. This phenomenon develops with a temperature inversion in a cold area because snow melts as it moves through the warm inversion layer. The precipitation then continues to fall and passes through the cold layer of air near the ground. When it moves through this final cold air mass it becomes super-cooled (cooled below freezing without becoming solid.) The supercooled drops then become ice when they land on items like cars and trees and the result is freezing rain or an ice storm. Intense thunderstorms and tornadoes are also associated with inversions because of the intense energy that is released after an inversion blocks an area’s normal convection patterns. Smog Although freezing rain, thunderstorms, and tornadoes are significant weather events, one of the most important things impacted by an inversion layer is smog. This is the brownish-gray haze that covers many of the world’s largest cities and is a result of dust, auto exhaust, and industrial manufacturing. Smog is impacted by the inversion layer because it is, in essence, capped when the warm air mass moves over an area. This happens because the warmer air layer sits over a city and prevents the normal mixing of cooler, denser air. The air instead becomes still and, over time, the lack of mixing causes pollutants to become trapped under the inversion, developing significant amounts of smog. During severe inversions that last over long periods, smog can cover entire metropolitan areas and cause respiratory problems for the inhabitants. In December 1952 such an inversion occurred in London. Because of the cold December weather, Londoners began to burn more coal, which increased air pollution in the city. Since the inversion was present over the city, these pollutants became trapped and increased London’s air pollution. The result was the Great Smog of 1952 that was blamed for thousands of deaths. Like London, Mexico City has also experienced problems with smog that have been exacerbated by the presence of an inversion layer. This city is infamous for its poor air quality, but these conditions are worsened when warm subtropical high-pressure systems move over the city and trap air in the Valley of Mexico. When these pressure systems trap the valley’s air, pollutants are also trapped and intense smog develops. Since 2000, Mexicos government has developed a plan aimed at reducing ozone and particulates released into the air over the city. London’s Great Smog and Mexico’s similar problems are extreme examples of smog being impacted by the presence of an inversion layer. This is a problem all over the world, though, and cities like Los Angeles, Mumbai, Santiago, and Tehran frequently experience intense smog when an inversion layer develops over them. Because of this, many of these cities and others are working to reduce their air pollution. To make the most of these changes and to reduce smog in the presence of a temperature inversion, it’s important to first understand all aspects of this phenomenon, making it an important component of the study of meteorology, a significant subfield within geography.

Marian Russell was the third and last child of William and Eliza St. Clair Sloan, who were of Scottish ancestry. She was named after Lady Marian Wallace whose tragic story touched her mothers heart. In this book, the author traces her life story from 1848 to 1936. During this period, she moved from St. Louis to California with her mother. The travel took her across the Santa Fe Trail – the historic nature of which is best brought out through Russell’s words: â€Å"It led from our eastern seaboard to the waters of the blue Pacific. If we could but measure it by the tears and the smiles it has known we would never be able to trace its way through American history†. The style of writing is very simple but very colorful. The author uses descriptive words to bring the scene before the readers: â€Å"†¦as we bore westward, the deer and the antelope bounded away from us. There were miles and miles of buffalo grass, blue lagoons and blood-red sunsets and, once in a while, a little sod house on the lonely prairie-home of some hunter or trapper†. She also includes minute details such as the freight charges during that period in time.   Ã¢â‚¬Å"The freight rate to Santa Fà © was $10.00 per hundred pounds. Teamsters and drivers were paid $25.00 per month plus rations†. The narrative is partly child like and partly adult in perspective as this is an account of the experiences of a small child dictated in an adult voice. The author talks about the dangers due to native Indians on the Santa Fe Trail. She recounts with horror the night when the Indians attacked the camp she was staying in and stole a herd of two hundred army horses. During this account, the author also gives deep insights to the culture of the people she met. The Indians she noticed valued some relatively small worth articles such as charms and disposed easily of some things of real value. These charms could be in the form of a war bonnet or a breech clout or even just a smooth pebble from the river. But charms were never for sale. Apart from Indian culture, she also gives accounts of the animals and plants along the route: big spiders, centipedes, scorpions, spiders, rattle snakes and lizards. There was also a variety of cactus that resembled trees, wild asters, scarlet honeysuckle, and night blooming poppies. Her poetic way of perception binds the reader’s interest in the book: â€Å"Sometimes a cactus, an old bone or a bunch of red grass caused the desert mirage to assume gigantic proportions†. Through her dialogue with Captain Aubry, Marian Russell traces the history of New Mexico. She also includes great details on Fort Union. She describes Santa Fe as a place full of â€Å"donkeys, goats and Mexican chickens†. During her stay at Santa Fe and Albuquerque, she gives accounts of Mexican food, their housing, their lifestyle, the legends they believed in, the Mexican Mandolin, their dressing style, the tragic story of Mrs. Adelaide Wilson, and the faith of the Catholic nuns. She crisply notes: â€Å"The old Mexican was pure Spanish and Indian, and often the Indian blood predominated; a class of people as colorful as the land in which they lived†. Thus, the book â€Å"Land of the Enchanted† by Marian Russell is a must-read for anyone with a fascination for Mexican history and culture. In the autobiography, the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, there is an underlying theme of knowledge as the path to freedom. During Douglass’ time, slave owners deprived slaves of an education and as a result, the slaves were thus deprived of freedom. Knowledge among slaves is what the white men feared the most, as knowledge not only â€Å"spoiled† slaves, it also provided them with the insight that ultimately paved their road to freedom. Knowledge corrupts, or â€Å"spoils† slaves, as it happened with Frederick Douglass. Because uneducated slaves could not think for themselves, they were thus forced to obey their masters, or â€Å"thinkers† who made their decisions for them. After Douglass learned to read The Columbian Orator, a book that boldly denounced the immorality of slavery and the whites, he began to harbor such bitter resentment toward his masters that he â€Å"wishes [him]self dead.† Knowledge emboldened Douglass, and gave him the courage to rebel against his masters. As a result, Douglass vowed to â€Å"run away† from the â€Å"band of successful robbers †¦ that reduced him to slavery.† Indeed, wisdom had â€Å"spoiled† Douglass; he has now gained a keen insight that allowed him to fully articulate the inhumanities of his masters. Knowledge gave Douglass the ability to recognize the enormities of the corrupt white slave owners. Douglass, for instance, points out that it was the white man who â€Å"shut [Douglass’] mouth, and then ask why [he doesn’t] speak,† thus proving that slave owners neither allow slaves to think for themselves, nor do they allow the slaves a voice in that decision. Furthermore, slave owners had previously instilled in their slaves the idea that any man who is independent is doomed to fall; consequently, slaves were misled to believe that freedom is slavery. However, Douglass, an educated slave, was able to realize that he too was created equal, that he too had rights, and also that he was not a slave, but a free man. In this way, Douglass managed to set into motion the gears of his emancipation. For Frederick Douglass, education was his â€Å"pathway from slavery to freedom.† With his wisdom, he not only dispersed his experiences to other slaves but also stirred up sentiments within the white abolitionists as well. Most people who are pro choice refute the notion of more harm done then good in usage. Joyce Arthur an activist for birth control was a part of several studies conducted in the U. S. Joyce cited â€Å"The consequences of mothers and fathers parenting children they did not want to bear resulted in damages both to the children and parents. † The children were significantly more likely to have mental handicaps, they performed significantly worse academically and were twice as likely to have a record of juvenile delinquency according to Dr. Jeffrey Peipert of Washington University in St. Louis in a study published. Activist states not only are we putting our future in jeopardy by denying them birth control, but we are also damaging our young teens. Teens whom had to bear unwanted children have shown consistent patterns of anti-social behavior and neglect by their own parents. Joyce argues â€Å"These issues are more detrimental than the marginal increase in sexual activity amongst teens. † Thus parents giving birth control devices to teens help society more according to Joyce Arthur. Many of those against birth control believe we cannot foresee the full impact of parents actively giving out birth control. According to Douglas J. Besharov,† Parents actively pushing birth control to teens ought to be aware of the possible increase in sexually transmitted diseases (STD). Citing a vast number or birth control devices protect against pregnancy but aren’t efficient at fighting the diseases. Besharov stated, â€Å"If only can we have our parents weigh the unwanted birth of a child, to the lost of a child to an S. T. D, they may see the lesser of two evils in promoting birth control. No method outside of condoms has proven to offer any protection from a S. T. D. Besharov asks, â€Å"Are we so concerned with unwanted births that we’d disregard the health of the living? † The debate on whether we should or should not give birth control to teens as gone on for years and will continue on for the foreseeable future. Both sides have made very valuable and valid points. There is no right or wrong answer it just a matter of beliefs and preferences. The only answer lies with in the person, if one chooses to have sex, with out question birth control should be readily available to them, to protect themselves from consequences. However, if there is any error at all in these debates it would be the notion that we should assume that all our teens are having sex. With this assumption for us to actively push birth control could indeed send the wrong message. For those who aren’t actively having sex it could be due to the fact that they don’t have their hands on birth control devices and by us giving it to them we could also be giving them the green light to have sex. These are syntax, semantics and pragmatics. Introduction Programming language is a language intended for use by a person to express a process by which a computer can solve a problem. It is use to make a program. Program is a formal description of characteristics required of a problem solution. Programs tell what should be not how to make it so. But first we have to learn and understand its component in order to write a correct program and to be able to predict the effect of execution of a program. Syntax, semantics and pragmatics are use to construct a program. These are the source codes and the meaning of it. Research Approach Syntax The structural rules of a language that determine the form of a program written in the language. Is the form in which programs are written to give the rules of syntax for a programming language to tell how statements, declarations, and other language constructs are written. Syntactic Specification The primary purpose of syntax is to provide a notation for communication of information between programmers and programming language processor. Readability A program is readable if the underlying structure of the algorithm and data represented by the program is apparent from an inspection of the program text. A readable program is often said to be self documenting, it is understandable without any separate documentation. Readability is enhanced by such language features is natural statement formats, structural statements, liberal use of keywords and noise words, provision for embedded comments, unrestricted length identifiers mnemonic operator symbols, free field formats, and complete data declarations. Writability The syntactic feature which make a program easy to write are often in conflict which those features which make it easy to read written ability is enhanced by use of concise and regular syntactic structures, while for readability a variety of more â€Å"verbose† constructs are helpful. Implicit syntactic conventions that allow declarations and operation to be left unspecified make programs shorter and easier to write but harder to read. Other features advance both goals; for example, the use of structured statements simple natural statement formats, mnemonic operation symbols, and unrestricted identifiers usually make program writing easier by allowing the natural structure of the problem algorithms and data to be directly represented in the program. Syntax is redundant if it communicates the same item of information in more than one way. Some redundancy is useful in programming language syntax because it makes a program easier to read and also allows more error checking to be done during translation. The disadvantage is that redundancy makes programs more verbose and thus harder to type. Most of the defaults rules for the meaning of language constructs are intended to reduce redundancy by eliminating explicit statement of meanings that can be inferred from the context. Ease of translation Ease of translation relates to the needs of translator that processes the written program. The key to easy translation is regularity of structure. Lack of Ambiguity Ambiguity is a central problem in every language design. A language definition ideally provides a unique meaning for every syntactic construct that a programmer may write. An ambiguous construction allows two or more different interpretations. The problems of ambiguity usually arise not in the structure of individual program elements but in the interplay between different structures. Ambiguities are usually resolved by one of the two techniques: either some syntactic modification is made to distinguish ambiguous constructions or some fixed interpretation is chosen, which may be dependent on the context, and the ambiguous syntactic construction is left intact. Semantics The meaning of the various languages constructs in the context of a given Program. The semantics of a programming language constructs are the various syntactic construct. A manual for a programming language must define the meaning of each construct in the language, both alone and in construction with other language construct. A language provides a variety of different constructs, and both the language user and implementer require a precise definition of the semantics of each constructs. The programmer needs the definition so as to be able to write correct programs and to be able to predict the effect of execution of any program statement. The implementer needs the definition so as to be able to construct a correct implementation of the language. Some Theoretical models and results. Many different methods for the formal definition of semantics have been developed. There are three general classes of such methods: 1. Operational Methods An operational definition of a programming language is a definition organized around a formal model of how programs in the language are executed on a virtual computer. It corresponds to an abstraction from our understanding of how languages are implemented. 2. Functional or denotational methods. A second class of semantic definition methods attempt to directly construct a definition of the function that each program in the language computes. This definition is built up hierarchically through definition of the function computed by each individual program construct. 3. Axiomatic Methods. * A third class of methods for semantic definition define the semantics of each syntactic construct in the language directly by giving an axiom or rule of inference tha may be used to deduce the effect of executio n of that construct. Pragmatics The pragma (pragmatic information) directive is part of the standard, but the meaning of any pragma depends on the software implementation of the standard that is used. Colonial Diversity Essays - Thirteen Colonies, Middle Colonies

Differences in the colonies of the early settling years of America were vast and diverse. There were three main sections of the land back then: New England, Middle colonies, and the Chesapeake area. The religious differences of these groups of colonies helped to shape our nation the way it was to become. New England colonies were settled mainly by Separatist, those colonies include largely: Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. These colonies, except Rhode Island were mainly conservative Congregationalist types; they tended to be very driven about who they were going to allow to live among them. Coming from England the colonies were eager to exhibit their own brand of religion and were not above oppressing people who did not view God as they did. ?As early as 1635 the first of a long succession of heresy trials imposing banishment as the most common penalty was held.? The exception to this rule was Rhode Island; they were a safe haven for the banished and the cast out. The middle colonies that will be discussed consisted of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Originally called New Netherlands they were inhabited primarily by the Dutch Reformed church. In 1664 the English took over and control was given to the Duke of York who gave the land to two of his friends one being William Penn who used this land to found Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania being the largest colony and settled primarily by Quakers, though it did have some diversity, constituted much of the middle colonies inhabitants. Quakers were generally kind acceptable people who did not persecute based on religious preference like the New England colonies. William Penn promoted the concept of religious tolerance that permitted people to live in a social community without the scare of persecution. Virginia and the colonies surrounding the Chesapeake area were very similar. Baptist were the new up and coming religion in the south, together with the Presbyterians, Roman Catholics, Quakers, Lutherans, and Moravians made up a great part of the southern colonies. The bulk of the colonies did eventually adopt a particular Religion however tended to loosely enforce its affiliation, or at least, did not persecute because of it. Maryland was the one particular colony that had an issue with people of other faiths. It was the intent of Lord Baltimore the Second to imbue his colony with religious tolerance and he was successful for the better half of two decades; the switch of power in England to James II and the allegiance by the Roman Catholics to Charles II created a rift in the colony and began more subjugation of the Catholics. Though they were oppressed they remained a large and influential part of Maryland society. The early English settlements of the new world were very peculiar. It is interesting to note that though the primary purpose for many settlers to travel this far from their homes was to escape religious persecution, some of them immediately set up societies and persecuted each other based of religious differences. William Penn and others who strived to have religious tolerance and live in a mutually beneficial society are responsible for the way our country is today.
